A free, self-guided ghost tour of Savannah — built by locals

The Forsyth Ghost Tour is a free audio walking tour of Savannah's Historic District: 17 narrated stops that begin near Forsyth Park and end at the Savannah River. Stories of the city's remembered dead — told at the places they happened — play automatically by GPS as you walk, or on demand from anywhere. No ticket, no app, no sign-up.

Every stop includes a full written transcript alongside the narration, so the tour works for deaf and hard-of-hearing walkers too. A live map with a direction beam shows where you are and where the next story waits. One honest note: the last stretch near the river crosses historic cobblestones and a steep ramp — wheelchair users and strollers can hear those final stops from the Bay Street sidewalk above.

The route runs north along Bull Street through Savannah's most storied squares — Monterey, Madison, Chippewa, Wright, Johnson — past the old Telfair Hospital, the Kessler Mansion, and the Cotton Exchange, finishing at the river where the city's memory runs deepest. It was written and built by the hosts of The Wilder House, an 1898 home three blocks from the park, in the neighborhood where the tour begins. Planning the rest of your day? Our free live Savannah planner reads the weather and the hour and names the best thing to do right now. And if you want to sleep where the tour begins — see the house: two suites, private parking, three blocks from the park.

Is the Forsyth Ghost Tour really free?

Yes — completely free. No ticket, no account, no app download. It runs in your phone's browser. It was built by the hosts of The Wilder House, an 1898 vacation rental three blocks from Forsyth Park, as a gift to anyone visiting Savannah.

How long does the ghost tour take?

About 90 minutes at an easy walking pace — 17 narrated stops from the Forsyth Park area north through the historic squares to the Savannah River. You can also do it in pieces; the tour remembers which stops you have finished.

Where does the tour start?

At the old Telfair Hospital near the southern end of Forsyth Park, then north through the squares along Bull Street, ending at the river. If you'd rather not walk, tap any stop and listen from wherever you are.

Do I need GPS or an app?

No app — it runs in the browser. GPS is optional: allow location and each story plays by itself as you arrive at its stop, or skip GPS and tap stops manually. Headphones recommended.

Is it safe to walk at night?

The route follows well-lit, well-walked streets — Bull Street and the squares. Use crosswalks, watch the uneven cobblestones near the river ramp, and keep the volume low enough to hear the city around you.

When is the best time to take it?

After dark, when the squares are lamp-lit and quiet — most evenings the walk is at its best from dusk onward. It works in daylight too, and the stories hold up rain or shine.

Free, from the hosts of The Wilder House — two 1898 suites three blocks from Forsyth Park.
Walk at night with care: use crosswalks, mind the cobblestones near the river, and keep the volume low enough to hear the city.
